October 5 @ 8:00 am - October 12 @ 5:00 pm$100
Creating and maintaining a website used to be a very complex and technical challenge. Fortunately, there are many tools available that make that task much easier and even fun.
WordPress is the most popular Content Management System (CMS) used in the world. Of course, there are others, such as Wix, Squarespace, Drupal, Joomla, and dozens of others.
WordPress is open source software, meaning the code is free and available to anyone (there are several other open source CMS products). Free means free, really! You can download the software and create websites for free in a matter of minutes.
What’s the catch? Well, even though the software is free, there are other factors involved that may cost you something, like web hosting, technical support, learning, plug-ins and add-ons. Many of these are available for little cost. Building and hosting a website is not entirely free, but by using WordPress, and other open source or low-cost solutions, doesn’t have to break the bank.
In this course, you will learn how to “spin-up a WordPress instance,” or put simply: get a site started.
- We’ll explore the differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org
- How to install a theme
- Creating pages and posts
- The magic of plug-ins
- Editing and posting
- Using images, graphics and “blocks”
- And a whole lot of other cool stuff!
In order to participate in this course, you will need a laptop computer (PC, Mac or Linux) that is internet accessible (that can be brought to class), as well as a functional, personal Gmail account (not associated with another organization, such as an .edu). There will be no required text for this course; all necessary review materials will be provided.
